Well, depends on how ambitions you are. I have a buddy that runs nothing but alcohol through his when he goes in and tada! He passes every time.

I usually stay out of these Cat threads but I have to say Bogus is right. The newer style cats are designed to do little harm to your horsepower. I took the cats off my 89 GMC truck and noticed no difference at all except that I couldn't pass emissions. I say leave the cats and seek power elsewhere.

Just my .02

If I decide to spend a bunch of money I don't have (I got married a month ago), does anybody (1) have a good source for cats and (2) have a place I could get the installed in Dallas.

Also, how good are the catco converters? They are half the price of any others.

I have heard of the catco, but I don't think they are "high-flow".

Check with Exotic Muscle or TByrne... they both sell Random Tech cats.

Also check with Magnaflow - they have CarSound Cats.

Dynatech cats are nice. We put a set on a buddies LT4 with EM headers this weekend. They are high flow, stainless, 3", and are about the same size a RT's.

Some folks are in favor of going with gutted cats because you may live in an area that currently doesn't have a problem with air pollution. I suggest you go with high flow cats and keep it that way.

Check at Summit or Jeg's. I believe they have hi-flow cats for about a $100 each.

There's no testing in my area, but I'm getting hi-flows put on when my dual exhaust are installed tomorrow.

I donno about the EPA... I would get fired for suggesting that precats are junk.

But I do wish others would be responsible... I am glad that many are getting cats installed now! That's so worth it.

I figure at this point, Mrcorvette91 isn't going to reply...

If testing is ever passed here, I promise..I will always have a way to get around it. I paid for my property, and no one will tell me how to maintain it. [/QUOTE]

Amen to that!

Here's my two cents... Where does the government get off telling us what we can and can't do to our own cars? Its even worse here in tree hugging California because the air here is "special". Frankly none of us are going to be alive a second longer than God wants us to, so why don't we enjoy the awesome sound of straight pipe corvette exhaust while we're at it.

Bogus, I admire your thoughts, I really do. If this is the way you feel, more power to you But as for me and my properties, we will never have cats on our vehicles any longer than they have to be (if they ever have emmission testing here, which I hope they don't). I have nothing against anyone's opinions, but I refuse to recycle, simply because if I am expected to recycle, they WILL pay me for it. Until then, my "recyclables", as well as my used motor oil will go into a ditch on the rear of my property and be burned. I try to respect everyones opinions...but I will continue to maintain my freedoms on my property. Just as I told my children...when you get 18, my job is finished. You are then on your own. You are your own person, and your future is up to you..yourself. Be your own person, just don't come to me expecting me to agree with your ideas, and don't come to me wanting money. They all know that when they turned 18, they were on their own, to get their bruises, or whatever they make their lives out to be. The best way to grow up, is to be faced with reality, with no assistance. I ask no one for help, and my kids know better than to ask me. That is the way I also feel about my properties. I buy, I operate, and I will continue to do this the way and manner I wish. My kids know if they come over to see me, call first. The world revolves on courtesy, and I do everything within my power to be courteous to everyone, and refuse to interefere in anyones lives. That's the way I live, and the way I always will.

I respect that method of living, to a point. And that point is when starts to effect others.

Your blatent disregard for life is astounding to me. Pouring used motor oil on your property is, to a degree, your right, but don't you know that you are poluting your own ground water? Or, worse yet, the aquafer that feeds drinking water in your area. And the air around when you burn it?

That is what is most selfish to me.

Burning trash is somewhat efficient, but a total waste of resources, resources that cost money to create from scratch, which are just as easy to reuse. Paper that can become paper again... cans that can become cans or car parts.

Why fill up our trash dumps with garbage, when it can be reused?

It's one thing to respect private property. It's another to abuse it so it becomes unusable.

It's that attitude that has created the problems we have in this country today. The attitude of waste and abuse of our wealth. There is a need to be aware that we share this planet... And if we use it up, well, it's gone... and what are your kids going to do? Oh, wait, it's now their problem. I see.

I suspect, to be honest, if you considered others opinions, and be genuinely courteous, your attitudes towards this planet would be different.

we pay taxes, we respect the laws of the land. You can't kill anyone, just for kicks, on your property... why should you be able to pollute the air that could kill the entire planet?

6 speedshifty I'm assuming from your post that you are also in California. If you think Big Brother telling us what to do bothers you, wait til they call you in to a test only center every year. Those are the smog ****'s. No paying them off. I know, my 89 vette and my 87 van get called in every year. PITA! They even check underneath with mirrors for the cats. If the car's too loud and they suspect theyr'e gutted, you lose. If your car burns clean and has all the required equiptment, you shouldn't have a problem. My van has 211k on it, sounds like hell and still (barely)passes.
I agree with keeping the air clean, as it doesn't really hurt performance...Bottom line is, they want those 80's cars off the road. Best thing we can do is show them that rodders are just as concerned about the environment as some tree hugger. We just go a little faster

My personal opinion is there should be no visual at all: Tailpipe only-But, we have to follow rules to live in this society without consequences. I'll sacrifice 4 or 5 hp to comply.

I agree I am probably the most selfish person you have ever met...ask anyone that knows me. I have learned through life many lessons, most of all that there is no one on earth you can trust or depend on. I used to trustr people, and do everything I could do to help, donate, etc. to others. Not any more. I know my ideas do not appeal to most people, but I am definately independant. I never hide my feelings, to anyone, even my wife. She knows that I do not trust anyone...including her. I do not give to any charities anymore, unless there is something in it for me. I guess you could say that through the experiences I have been through, I have become "hardened", and am void of feelings. You may be right. But I continually have a clear frame of mind, and never hold my true feelings from others, regardless if I agree with them or not. I did not post to argue, only to give my input on this subject. I respect others opinions, and have no problem with them. I may not be politically correct, but I am brutally honest with everyone.

All things being equal, I pity you. I feel so sorry for your wife and children. So sorry...

I hope that as you get older, you seek help for these issues. Otherwise, you will become bitter, reclusive, and, finally, alone. No one will want to associate with you... is that your goal? If so, it's working.
