You can tell the depth you need by sticking a straw or wire into the hole, hold your fingers where the straw is flush with the block, then, as you're holding it, remove it and measure.
I know they're 38thsx16 (coarse), but I never paid any attention to the actual length. 3/4" sounds right though. I use lock washers under the bolt heads on mine, too.
