Default Batwing bushing question

What is the easiest way to change the batwing bushings? I already have the exhaust system and the rear tie rod set-up off. I don't have the headers back in the car yet so I also have easy access to the motor mount bolts. I can make a tool to remove the old bushings easy enough, or if the batwing is off I have a 30 ton press.

Can the rear end be lowered enough to change the bushings without removing the torque arm, etc?

Is it possible to remove the batwing from the D44 once the spring and camber rods are off?

Thanks for the help

You can just relieve the spring pressure by removing the nuts off the lowering bolts and unbolt the 2 batwing bolts. It drops down just enought to work on the bushings. The PITA is getting the old rubber ones out Get the thin metal sleeve out also.

That's good news for a change. Now it's time to make a tool...

Thanks again for the info

I have read that people have had good success with a cut-out tool (roto-zip or equivalent). I will try that method when I get ready to do my bushings.

I would remove the diff and use a press to remove the bushings and while I had it apart, I would replace the universals and the other rear end bushings. I feel that by the time you remove enough of the rear end parts to drop the dif enough to change the batwing to frame bushings you could have pulled the diff out and completed the job on a press. Getting the metal inserts out is not that difficult on a workbench; however, I bet it would be a real bear in the confined area under the car.

Good luck

Mike
