I am trying to put the timing chain on my newly ground 383. L-98, '90.
When the engine is turned manually, it does not stick at all during its rotation, nor does the cam. However, when i have the Cloyes double roller timing chain all attached at TDC (both 1 and 6 high--if that is right) well anyway, the chain will bind at the same point, a few degrees rotation past TDC. What does this mean? Crank gear not aligned? (Seems to be all the way in). I have put it on and off four times, same result.) need help? timing marks are lined up 12 and 6 oclock. cam bolts tight.
There some bosses behind the cam gear the chain may be hitting on one or more of them. I had the same problem on my engine. i used a dremel tool to grind 2 of the bosses down to provide the needed clearance.
are these the raised areas just under the top timing chain gear? I did notice one at about twelve o clock that looked as if it had been worn away." however, the back of the cam gear was fine. I will look into that. thanks!

Thats the ones. The gear doesn't hit them, it will clear no problem, but when you put the chain on it hits.
