Anybody have any idea where the valet switch is on the 84 vette. From what I understand it is possibly in the door light switch. I need to program a new remote but I need the valet switch to do so, otherwise I will be digging into the passenger kick plate. Any help would be great.... keep the shiny side up
Pardon my ignorance, but what is a valet switch? Especially as related the an '84. 1984 Corvettes were not availble with a remote. If the valet switch is a part of an aftermarket add-on, it could be anywhere.
RACE ON!!!
PS. I am aware of a valet switch for the ZR1 cars.
Some people referred to the "Full Power" switch that was on the ZR-1s as a "Valet Switch" That keyed switch controlled power to the second set of injectors and the relay that controlled the secondary throttle plates.
Outside of the ZR-1, the C4 never had any sort of a switch that cut engine power.
I've got an after market alarm in my 87, I had it installed. The valet switch on mine is located underneath the knee panel-drivers side. It's a button you must push in and hold for a second or so with the ignition on.This just disenables the alarm for mechanics etc.
Like CFI-EFI said-on an after market alarm, it can be located anywhere.
Other than that-even in the 87s they didn't come with remote or valet
switches.
Well, actually the 84 came with a Viper alarm system (this is even described in the wiring diagrams as well the owners manual). The situation is this, in order to do ANY programming of the system from new fobs (transmitter) being installed to the actual functionality of the alarm system requires use of the valet switch. At one time I thought I had seen where it was accessed through the door light(map) switch but I have tried that to no end. I hope this helps.

The only way it came with it is if it was dealer installed. I have the 84 factory service manual, and there is no such thing. If you have documents showing otherwise, we'd be glad to see them. Did keyless entry even exist in 84 on any car?

Good choice of words. I TOO would be VERY interested in seeing any documentation. MY service manual has a separate wiring diagram in Section 8C. It appears the only parts unique to the "Theft Deterrent System" are the door lock units, the door lock anti-tamper switches, the electronic theft deterrent controller, and the starter interrupt relay. NO valet switch! Neither my Factory Service Manual nor my owners manual make any mention of a key fob, a remote activator, or "valet" procedures. A little proof please.
I too have an 84 vette, and I have never seen or read anything about keyless entry/ remotes ect.. I have since disabled the factory alarm system, and had an aftermarket one installed. I now have keyless entry, but it certainly was not stock.
Yes it is in the 1984 Corvette Electrical Troubleshooting Shop Manual Supplement. I have this in PDF format but because it is copywritten I am a little hesitant to send the whole file and it will not let cut and save just the pages referring to the theft deterrant system. The manual number is ST-364-84 ETM. It has the electrical diagram in it as well some very sketchy descriptions and again it does not show anyrelation to the valet switch. I think I will just break down the panel and hook my own switch up to it for programming purposes.
Thanks all.
Woody
Did you remove the fuse cover and check the fuses? Sometimes with an after market alarm the installer will "tap" off a fuse.
I to have a 84 and see no reference to a valet switch.
in that manual it starts on page 86 unless you have the PDF verion and then it starts on page 87. There is also reference in the owners manual on pages 1-1 and 2-37. Now the owners manual does not refer to keyless entry which the way this one works is basically as a remote door opener but it does not enable or disable the actual alarm. If this is indeed an aftermarket system, I would think the valet switch would be as all of you have said under the dash on the drivers side. Maybe I'll put my darn glasses on and take a look.
Pages 87 and 88 of the PDF are schematics of the theft deterrent system. I see no reference to a remote, valet switch, or a receiver, anywhere in the drawing. What is it you see that make you think this system has a remote?
Woody glad to see you have an 84, they are fun cars I own 2 my self. These cars never had a remote. THe anti-theft system is controled by the power door lock switch and all it does is disable the starter if the system is armed and the door is opened without the key. If you have a remote, then it is part of an aftermarket system. Viper alarm is a aftermarket system. Did you get any paperwork on the alarm? If not check the web for that alarm system and see if there is a wiring diagram. As for where the equipment is located, it could be anywhere. Try contacting the previous owner to see if he has any more info on the alarm.
Mine is an Alpine system I had installed in '91. They located the valet switch under the passenger side dash area. It's nothing but a small spring loaded toggle mounted on a small metal strip. I think your best chance of locating your particular valet switch is to look for any small switch (toggle or otherwise) that just doesn't look stock or like it came there.
By the way, mine uses a proximity system mounted in the console area that casts a field around the car so that if someone reaches inside with the top off or windows down it will activate. It has worked flawlessly since installed and I would recommend it enthusiastically.
