I notoced something new today when I started my 92 Coupe. As I was letting it idle to warm up a high-pitched whistling started up from under the hood. I popped the hood and found that the noise was coming from the AIR Pump located in the compartment in front of the driver's side front wheel. It stopped after a minute or 2, but everytime I start it now, it does the same thing for a couple of minutes, then stops. I am assuming that the pump is starting to crap out on me and will need to be replaced soon. Has anyone done this yourself and is there anything difficult about it?
The pump is electric and is held in place by bolts. Should be a very straight forward replacement. There is a rubber tube from the pump to the AIR system but it's just held by a hose clamp.
There should be no need to remove anything else but you could remove the round vacuum housing to gain more room.
i've removed the pump last year to get at the radiator shroud bolts. it was pretty straightforward, but some of the rubber ducting could be stubborn to come off.
mine's been wailing like a banshee at startup for over two years. it has not crapped out yet. if you ditch the pump altogether you will trigger a diagnostic code, unless you reprogram the ECM.
Thanks- yeah I figured if I removed it, it would throw a code. I have a rebuilt AIR pump coming- should be in Monday ($200+ core charge)
I was just fiddling with the one in my car. Dang, that's an expensive little bugger for something that doesn't actually make the car go faster!
Good luck getting the air intake duct outta the way to access the radiator shroud. I used the "bend the plastic and pray" method. I got it out, but getting it back in oughtta be real fun...
OK- AIR pump came in today- replaced it in about a half hour. Not a bad job- just don't lose your grip on those pesky screws. Took a test drive and all is well. $180.00 total. No more whistle.

Where did you buy the rebuilt pump? I'm just curious....
Wish I would have seen this post earlier.. I just took my air pump out. Could have saved you a few $$.
On removing the vacuum "sphere".. It looks to me like the hose routes somewhere other than the air pump. Does anyone know what this thing actually connects to??
