Default Code "36"

'88, automatic

Service Engine Soon light came on - checked the codes - Code 36 - Helms says MAF Burnoff Sensor. I looked at what Helms says to do about it - but, er , well, I don't get it.

Any thoughts?

the burnoff is a cleaning process that the MAF goes through.

check the relays... this is EASY... just trade one relay for another; they are all the same!

More then likely, you would be wise to invest in a new MAF and new relays.

I've had this happen twice in 2 years, although I think mine was code 34 - turned out to be the relays both times. They're about $12.50 each.

The last time it happened was about 4 months ago. The ECM got a bit confused and the car ran strangely, not open loop or limp home mode, just not normal - I fitted 2 new relays and everything has been fine since.

Hope this helps

Just went through this myself. Replaced both relays and still was out of luck. Replaced the MAF and the code is gone. I purchased a rebuilt sensor from NAPA. Got it along with a company discount . Tired several bone yards here and could not find one. It seems that the yards are not what they used to be. Good used parts are harder to find. Good luck.
