I have a strange problem which seems to happen only when the car is cold. Going around a gentle right hand bend at about 50 mph sets up a fairly violent shaking/wobble of the steering wheel (almost as if a wheel is going to fall off). When the car warms up all is OK.
It sits for days at a time in the garage - only an occasional driver. I wonder if the tires are developing flat spots that rectify themselves after a few miles of driving?
I've checked the wheel nuts / checked for loose wheel bearings and all the suspension mountings are tight.
Mine does the same thing until the tires heat up. Are your tires like mine? Old but, plenty of tread? A fresh set will correct it but, it is fairly common with ultra-wide tires on weekend cars. In other words, save your money and warm the tires up.....
If it is not old tires with hard rubber that are losing traction while cornering when cold, then I would think you might be describing a front end alignment issue with the camber going from negative to positive and the tires chattering

Thanks RubyRed. Yes, old tires but plenty of tread. I'll just make sure they are warmed up. However I am going to double check all bolts etc. today and will go and get an alignment done this weekend.
