Help!
My 1990 coupe has some warning lights that I want to "fix" as cheaply as possible! The seatbelt light indicates a sensor gone bad in the mechanism, however the seatbelt works. Any suggestions on what to do besides replace the whole thing?
The INFL RES light is on indicating another sensor malfunction. . . mechanic says it is probably a clock ring in the steering column - very expensive to get to and replace. . . it is not an inspection issue in PA and it does not mean that the airbag will not work. Anybody have similar problems? Any suggestions? I am selling the car, so I don't want to put lots of $$$ into it.

Actually, the seatbelt doesn't sound too hard too fix..
And the clock ring can be done if you have the patience
and the time.. Cheap fix on a Vette? hehe, I'd like to see ONE...
You need to retrieve a fault code. If a fault is detected, the DERM will illuminate both the "INFL REST" and "FASTEN SEATBELT" indicators and store a fault code in memory.
I seriously doubt you have a problem with your seatbelt. If you haven't hit anything lately, your problem could be a sensor grounding issue or something simple like that.
Hunser first disconnect your battery then pull up the carpet in the footwell area on both sides. You will see a connector comming through the firewall. Disconnect it and find yourself an ohm meter. You will see 3 pins in the connector. Test the connector comming through the firewall. With the small notch in the connector facing down and the single pin at the top take your ohm meter and put your test leads on the top pin #1 and the bottom left #2 they should read about 10,000 ohms same with pin #1 and #3 bottom right. Now ohm pins #2 and #3 they should ohm less than 1 ohm if they don't ohm out then you have a bad frame sensor. Which is on the frame rails close to the firewall. But to reach them you will have to remove the side panels behind the wheels. They are 10mm bolts that hold them on. But before you put the new one on clean the frame rail where the sensor sits of all paint and rust. Put a little dielectric grease on it and tighten it down. Find out what code the info center blinks out and it will tell you what sensor or if the DERM (diagnostic energy reserve module) is bad. GET BACK TO ME AND I'LL HELP YOU SOME MORE IF I CAN GOOD LUCK
