Default PROM orientation

I have always said there is no such thing as a dumb question but this one may cross the line. Which way is the PROM oriented in a 165 ECM. Does the notch (arrow) go on the outside or the inside? I would bet the farm I have been running it on the outside but the instructions that came with my new ECM clearly state and have a diagram showing the notch on the inside. Now I understand why chip burning should only be done with adult supervision.

I hope I understand your question correctly.

I believe that the MEMCAL can only go in one way, for there are notches that prevent it from being 180* out.

As far as the flash chip in say a Moates adapter, the chip has either a small triangle or dot that should be oriented like shown below.

I hope this is what you are asking about, Ed.

Let me rephrase: Correct, the MEMCAL is indexed and will only go into the ECM one way. The PROM can be plugged into the MEMCAL with the notch to the outside (your lower left pic) or to the inside. I am not using my Moates adapter all the time, only when emulating.
