hello all, I am building a 63 grand sport replica that uses 96 suspension. I love doing things the hard way, so i decided that since the sensors were there, all i needed was the pump and harness to have abs. I did not say i was a genius, I said that i love doing things the hard way. If you think that was hard, try getting LS1 intake air over the 63 radiator.
Anyway, I mounted the pump and started to wire it and have some ends left over. The main part that is left goes to an electonic suspension control module. Is this something that i have to have to make the abs work. If i get this module will it be functional in any way. will the abs work without it, 4 wheel sensors and power to the pump?
thanks to all
i'm not sure if this is what you mean, but the C4 abs system uses an accelerometer. it will not work without the accelerometer or some other means of completing the loop with the proper voltage. (some racers defeat it by figuring out the correct resistance to replace the accelerometer.)
my knowledge on the subject is very limited, hopefully this helps you get started in the right direction.
The electronic brake and traction control module (EBTCM) is absolutely necessary for the ABS to function. It's the brains of the opperation. It'd be like putting a late model engine in and attempting to run it without the PCM. Now I'm not sure about the '96 as I have a '94, but the module doesn't have anything to do with the suspension, just the ABS and ASR. Therefore, to make the system work, you'll probably need to full compliment of sensors and actuators that was used in the car it came from. This can get pretty involved. Good luck!
It may be easier to integrate a 1991 ABS into the system. It does not have the traction control (ASR) fuction.
I will also warn you - ABS is not something that is suspension dependant. It is VEHICLE dependant. It expects standard inputs from rather fixed variables, most importantly, center of gravity.
If you don't put the accellerometers in exactly the right place, the ABS will be more bad then good.
In my opinion, as cool as it is, it may not be worth messing with.
is this accelerameter something that goes in the dash, where is its location on a stock car? i do appreciate your help on this issue
it is mounted at the bottom of the radio cavity.
let me add a few things.
- the ABS functionality uses wheel speed sensors only as the inputs. it does not use the accelerometer. the tuning/calibration of the thing is highly vehicle dependent as bogus pointed out.
- the ASR system uses wheelspeeds, the lateral (sideways G's) accelerometer, throttle - maybe some other inputs too.
- both ABS and ASR are controlled by the same brain - the EBCM (EBTCM) MaxLean mentioned.
on flat roads the ABS system may actually function correctly in your 63, if you keep to the stock 96 tire sizes. on bumpy roads or gravel is when the ABS tuning will really come into play.
