Default Should I pull the Plenum?

Quick one for you guys....

I pulled my TB off the other night in order to clean it, the IAC, etc.

Thought about pulling the plenum also well I'm at it, but decided against when it looked like the gasket kit for the plenum was going to be pricy.

Picked up the new TB gasket kit today.... and they had actually brought in the plenum kit AS WELL, because they wanted to be sure they were bringing in the right gaskets for me. Plenum kit was only $22.00 so I picked it up also.

Whaddayasay guys, should I pull and clean the plenum while I've got her apart? is ther anything particularly tricky about it. It appers to be pretty straight-forward.

(ps, for thsoe who read my post the other night, I have done the TB bypass as well, bought a little section of hose, a couple of clamps and a connector, and 2 caps for the inlet/outlet on the IAC.

TIA

the only reason to pull it is to grind it out and debur it... I guess you can clean it, but I have found they don't get as dirty as the TB.

It won't hurt, but those torx bolts are a BITCH.

Follow-up question as well.

I ended up with 2 TB gaskets...but they are slightly different, both in shape and material. I am wondering which one would be better to use.

The lighter one feels and looks more like cork (from NAPA) and doesn't seperate the 2 port holes, whereas the darker one (FelPro) feels more like a fibre product, and seperates the 2 ports.

Any thoughts on which is better.

I also picked up some gasket sealer/adhesive. Should I use this on all the gaskets?

THANKS GUYS!!!!!

Either will work.

No sealer... if anything, a bit of high-tack, but it isn't necessary.

Thanks Bogus,

Here is what she looked like when I took her apart the other night. Maybe I'll just save the plenum gasket kit for some point in the future when the plenum HAS to come off.

korvette4u suggested that I just leave it on and spray carb cleaner in there and that a lot of the build-up would burn out once I get her back together and running.

If that willa cheive a similar result that may be the way to go, rather than wrestling with the torx bolts.

Don't even think about pulling the plenum just to clean it.

Use the darker gasket; it looks like the one that came out, right.

I use no sealer of any kind on the gasket.

have you guys really looked at that picture?! Is that not a layer of carbon that is built up inside of the plenum? it for sure had carbon on the back of the throttle blades and I would think it would be much thicker farther back!
When I rebuilt my engine last year the inside of my plenum, tubes and intake were coated with carbon! thats got to cause a restriction!

Looking at the fromnt of the plenum that gasket did not seperate the ports. It looks like the tan gasket, not the grey one.

Dude, as long as you have emissions hooked up-you're gonna get that black stuff in there. I would however, clean the tB blades to make sure that they close and open properly. I sure there is some type of cleaner you can spray in to clean the runner while its running, but I have never used anything.

Default Which gasket to use?

Just my .02
I would use the TB gasket that is shaped like the one that came out
of your engine.
As long as your throttle blades are clean and open/close properly,
it should run just fine.

If you do go to the trouble of removing your plenum,
then at least remove the two restrictions at the bottom of the opening in front. That will offer some performance return for the trouble of
the R+R. It won't be a fully ported plenum, but it'll help.

Go here to see which gasket you should use. Everything you need to know about C4 Vette and Camaro/Firebird intake systems.
When I fixed the leaking front and rear intake seals, I used sealer on everything. I have read about too many times about vacuum leaks and decided I wasn't going to deal with that.

No, that stuff is blowby from the pcv system. The EGR won't foul the throttle body.
