Default 96 Vert A4 tranny problem

I had a "service soon" light come on the DIC. We read the code (transimission solenoid), cleared it, and I had no problems for a few days. Today we went for a cruise. The light was on again. The car felt sluggish at first, the passing gear gear wouldn't kick in, and the tranny would not down shift when going (manually) from the overdrive select to "D" position on the shifter. Any help with this issue would be appreciated. One of the guys in my Corvete club suggested servicing the transmission with new filter and fluid. What do you guys think? Should I take it to a trusted transmission guy here in town and have the tranny serviced and the soenoid replaced? The car has 43,000 miles. I'm not sure if the tranny has ever been serviced, I am the second owner.

sounds like a big 10-4 to me. Instead of just getting the fluid replaced, get it power flushed.

Draining the fluid only gets about 40% of the old out. Doing a power flush gets it all out.

The 4l60e has an aluminum valve body. They tend to hang up and wear the valve body bores much worse than an old 4l60. You may have to replace the valve body. Talk to a local trans specialist. Do not change it on my say so. But be prepared for that possibility.

They had to replace the valve body in my '95's 4L60E @ 37,000 or so.

I've gone through that twice!

I just got my transmission back last Monday...

Be prepared for the valve body... also the 2-4 clutch and drum are prone to going as well.

What's it cost for that valve body? Is it doable for a home mechanic or do you deed special tools and dealer equipment?

If it is the valve body, wth time and patience it is not too difficult. Maybe consider putting in a shift kit while it is apart.... As long as it is not slipping....

You would need a torque wrench and about 8 quarts of trans fluid...

I'm not sure what the cost is on the body itsself...

I sent my whole trans of and just had it blueprinted... and tricked out...
