Default A/C help

My A/C is blowing hot air. The compressor and clutch were replaced about a year ago. I was experiencing intermittent uncooled air, now that is all I get. I have the automatic climate control and the mode selector light is flashing.

Does anyone have any ideas? I need to drive it this weekend and since I am in Texas, this is comparable to torture without A/C.

Thanks in advance.

You didn't mention what year - but my first guess is that you are low on freon(r12 or r134) . The first thing you need is a set of gauges. Harbor Freight has a set for about $50 or so.

The flashing light is the diagnostic mode. My 93 flashes 9 times for low freon. Did you convert over to R134a? If so, check the fittings first, the ones under the red and blue caps. They have a tendency to back off over time and leak if not torqued properly. If they are tight, you might recharge with a dye additive to locate the source of the leak. If you can't get the compressor to kick on, try Disconnecting the battery, wait a minute, then re-connect, then run the jumper wire across the pressure switch, I use a paper clip.
Good luck, keep us posted.

Sounds to me like Temp. door failure. I experienced this on my 88. Underneath the dash on the passenger side, there is a motor by the ECM that controls an arm that opens and shuts the temp door depending on the temperature set on your climate control unit. (I'm assuming this is the electronic climate control system, if not this doesn't work for you) The rod thats connected to this motor is held on by a tiny white plastic clip that tends to get brittle and break.

To check the operation of the temp door, on the passenger side of the car towards the firewall (where the A/C lines run into), the evaporator housing, there is a resistor sitting up top, it is held in by 2 screws. Remove that resistor pack, and stick a flashlight in the hole. Have another person change the temperature from cold to hot and observe the temp door. It should be moving when the temperature changes, if not, I would suspect that the plastic clip is broken. After mine wouldn't move, I stuck a long screwdriver down in there and looked to see if it was jammed, it moved freely (not good).

There is a way to diagnose the climate control system, but I can't remember off the top of my head, and there is a code for the temp door being down.

If that is the case, post back and I can walk you through the replacement. I tried to do a tech tip about this, but I couldn't get any good pictures as it's all done under the dash. I think the clip cost me $4 at the GM dealership.

Let us know.

Based on your profile , is it your '95 with the issue? If it is then it came with R134a. I would go to your local Walmart and buy a R-134a top up kit. It should be less than $10.
Follow the instructions and top up the unit and see if it now blows cold

Are all the doors moving?
Verify that the system is getting enough vacuum from the engine. There are a couple of places it could leak in between the intake manifold and the programmer/controller(on the inside firewall next to the steering column). You'll need a sharp eye, they hide real good.

My car is a 95. My signature didn't show up.

I will check it out tonight. I don't think it is low on R-134a since it was blowing cold then stopped. It sounds like one of the other problems mentioned.
