need more advice please, after pulling and pushing and pulling some more, I finally got the fuel rail and injectors to break loose - and only by gently using a pair of channel locks on a few injectors to gain leverage. The problem is all of the past moisture has rusted out the base of some of the injectors and caused lots of corrosion. I have a couple of good pictures but I can't figure out how to post them here. So, how do I clean out the injector ports in the manifold of all of the sediment, etc? the crud has nowhere to go but down into the manifold... any tips? Thanks
I would think after you put the new ones in it will all blow out through the cylinders. If it is reallbad you might try a magnet wand and see if it will pick up anything.
A shop vacuum and a small brush works wonders. Hold the nozzle of the vacuum near the ports while gently brushing the debris. The vacuum will suck up the dirt allowing very little if any to drop into the injector ports. It also works good at sucking up the acorns, small leaves, pine needles, mice droppings or any other debris that has accumulated on the manifold.
thanks for the advice. I am a bit concerned that my tugging on the fuel rail is likely to create new leak headaches for me once I re-pressurize the system.
Hopefully this attempt to post the injector picture works. Is the oil film around the injector normal, or is this the result of my worn/old valve stem seals?
Unless the engine was somehow submerged in water, you are probably looking at gum and varnish and the intake ports probably have the same build up, though the source would be the PCV valve and not fuel, so if you really want to clean it up, you should remove the manifold. Otherwise, Throttle Body Intake Cleaner should remove the deposits, though I prefer Electrical Contact Cleaner as it has a much higher evap rate. Be sure to lube the new o-rings with 30 wt or machine oil before you install the new injectors.
