Fun time... The 85 MAF will work in 85-89 MAF cars...BUT ONLY an 85 MAF will work in an 85 TPI system.
The 85 MAF used a pulsing voltage signal, the other years used a steady voltage but the 86-89 ECM's can't see the pulsing (either from a buffer or they were too slow in that area) BUT the 85 must see the pulsing.
The MAF on my 88 IROC looks exactly like the one on my 85
It would be interesting to see if you could interchange them. I read somewhere that you should use a later MAF in a '85 because they are cheaper as the 85 is one year specific. Wish I could remember where I read that.

You probably read it here and it's very possible that I wrote it. I have told members quite a few times about this but am happy to do it again. I had the good fortune to meet Gordon Killebrew one day when he was visiting Jay at Vette2Vette here in my town. I had went to Jay to see if he could tell me if my MAF was bad, Gordon stepped in with free advice and told me that my MAF was indeed bad and that when I go to get one I should get one for say an '88 or 89. He explained that the newer ones will work just fine and that the reason the 85 is so expensive is that there were not that many made so they are more scarce for reconditioning, thus more expensive. I went and got a MAF for an '88 from NAPA and that was 4 years ago with 3 trips from Illinois to Georgia and a ton of other smaller trips and it is working just fine.
DO NOT believe anybody when they tell you an '85 has to have an '85 MAF.
