Default True Dual Exhaust????

Hey guys!

I have a true dual exhaust system sitting in my garage and some TPIS headers with provisions going to Jet Hot for ceramic coating.

Any advantages or disadvantages on going with true duals, or is there a better set up I should be looking at other than my stock exhaust with Flowmasters?

I've got a pretty stock 86 L98 with aluminum heads with most of the common mods, but plan on adding SLP runners, porting plenum to match and adding some roller rockers in near future.

Any suggestions on exhaust, I just want to get it right the first time!!!!!!!

Default duals

I have an 85 that had true duals with stock manifolds and no cats or resonators when I bought it , the performance is good , but the drone is relentless.I would like to know what I could do to tone it down a little and still keep the performance, sorry I'm not trying to hijack your thread.

I also have an 86 with aluminum heads. I found a used cat back system with Flowmasters. They sound good to me. Deep tone, not too loud. I belive they are the 2 or 3 chamber (aka quieter series).
True duals are generally a better setup, better flow. If you need to pass emissions, better put a high flow cat on each pipe. A crossover pipe is a nice touch too. Since you have a system sitting around, go ahead and use it.
True duals with no cats put out more noise, so choose you mufflers carefully. Vettes have more exhaust noise because of the muffler position and the hatch space with glass. Think symphony hall acoustical shape.
What mods have you done to your '86? I'm curious myself to hear how your duals work out for you. My setup is the factory crossover pipe with 1 high flow cat (two pre-cats are removed) and the cat back with Flowmasters. The sound is fine, good tone w/ a couple db higher than stock.

As far as mods go, I've done the basics

Cut MAFS screens, Cut Air Lid with K&N, Hypertech SuperCoil, MSD Wires, 160 Thermostat and some tuning tips I've got from this forum.

I currently have the stock exhaust set-up with Flowmasters but had a crossover tube put between the Y in the rear which eliminated any kind of resonance. It's almost quiet on the inside, but sounds great at WOT!!

true duals are annoying... I am not a fan of them.

Besides, there are some performance options to consider. True Duals don't scavage as well. It's best to add a Borla NASCAR style X-pipe. That will allow the left bank to scavage the exhaust gases from the right bank, by creating a vacuum in the system. The right bank helps the left....

Other considerations: Get some cats. I suggest bullet style cats for the true duals. So, it would look something like this:

LTs to bent pipes (this will bring the exhaust in to the center tunnel), then off to the x-pipe and then the cats. Straight pipes to the next bend for stock muffler locations.

This system will be louder then stock, but, should go along way to controlling drone.

Another suggestion - factory iron manifolds kill so much of the engines noise. I would have coated headers, then, wrapped in header tape. The tape should help to kill some of the header ring.

Just my .02 worth.

Random Tech makes great stuff www.randomtechnology.com . Luckily, there are my neighboor here in Atlanta. I can just pick up and save shipping.
Just be sure you are getting a true high flow converter. It's also better to get a converter made for a Vette, or at least a V8.
Take your time do your research. A good exhaust system can be your friend for life.

Exotic Muscle and TByrne Racing both sell high-flow cats.
