I don't know if anyone has tried this to remedy the problem of a leaking water pump onto the Opti. Why not put a small plastic hose in to the drain hole to redirect the leaking coolant away from the Opti?
Give your input on this, please.
My water pump also leaks a small amount of fluid, not even enough for me to have to fill the reservoir tank since I bought the car in February. The car never gets hot (even in way South Texas) and the fans kick on when they are supposed to.
I have been told to replace the pump, even though it functions properly. Is this a common occurrence in the LT1/LT4's?
The "weep hole" on the water pump allows any coolant getting out past the seals to keep from causing corrosion on the aluminum housing. Once you see coolant coming out, it typically means that the seals will fail at some point.
Water in the Opti is usually a fatal condition so making sure the water pump is not leaking is good for Opti survival. If you catch any leakage from the pump quickly, you can save the cost of replacing the Opti.
IMHO, anything that puts off replacing a leaky water pump is only delaying the time when the water pump fails. Murphy's Law applies to LT1 water pumps too; it will fail at the most inopportune time and with the greatest amount of destrucion possible at the same time.
