Hey, I've tried searching for the answer and couldn't find anything useful. Last night while I was driving the care automatically locked itself and the PKE light came on and then turned off after about 10 seconds. When I parked, everything seemed ok, it locked when I walked away and the horn beeped. When I came back to the car it wouldn't unlock with the FOB, I had to use the key, and the PKE light now stays on. I read in the manual that it sounds like I turned off the PKE, but I can't seem to get it turned back on. Both of my key FOBs don't work and the hatch button won't work either. I also checked the batteries and they seem to be good. I also can't get into the programming mode to reprogram them. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
What year? This link below is how I fixed mine this weekend. Seems everyone has ignored the importance of the "key in" switch or whatever it's called. Stick your key the whole way in the ignition and see if the warning chimes when you mopen the drivers door. If it doesn't the PKE system will never program properly. The reciever has to see the key in the ignition to display any codes or complete the programing sequence.
BTW I'm about done writing big explanations for things I find and what fixed them. Too many threads about, "what gear ratio" "what tires" "what coolant" blah blah blah people really need to search things before posting the same dam questions over and over again. In the meantime a detailed fix gets lost in the muck and mire.
Sorry, it's a '96. And all the chimes and door ajar lights work like they're supposed to. The thing that gets me about programming it is that I remember last time I did it, the PKE light wasn't on when I started the sequence. The light is constantly on now, so I don't know if that's why I can't enter programming mode.
Pull the codes for it. Ground pin 8 of your DLC connector with a paperclip and jumper wire. Key fully into the ignition but not on. See if it flashes any codes.

If you don't get any codes you may need to pull the dash cap and do some probing on the PKE reciever module connector. I actually just opened mine up and layed it out so I could probe the inner part of the connector. It was much easier.
You've got a tough road ahead, why they buried that dam thing in there so far is beyond me. It's a total pain in the **** to get to.
Do you have the Helm manual? It's a must for troubleshooting this system.
Ok, the DLC connector is the 16 pin connect right under the dash on the driver's side, right? I jumped the 8 and the 5 pins, and put the key in... nothing at all, no PKE light, just the key in chime. Is this going to be a job for dealer?
I had trouble with mine a few weeks ago. I even replaced the battery in the FOB. To make a long story short it turned itself off and I was not holding the fob button long enough to reset it. I disconnected the car battery for about ten minutes and when I finally conduted a twenty count while holding the button down on the fob all was well. \\
However,
Helm has pages of troubleshooting charts for the PKE, I hope that your problem is something simple.

You did check the fuses right? RDO BATT. 5A and PKE 5A? Also the POWER LOCK 20A fuse runs to the PKE receiver. I assume your power door locks are working though so that fuse should be good.
KISS theory, keep it simple stupid.
Don't assume the fuses are good, test them with a volt meter in circuit or an ohms meter out of circuit.
If those are good, well...
I suppose if you want this to be a job for a dealer it can be. Almost sounds like you're going to need to get to the module and do some testing. Maybe you might have some loose connections at that connector header I'm talking about in my other thread.
I pulled my reciever and opened it up, it's real easy to get open. I took the circuit board out and resoldered the connector to the circuit board. It's kind of tough because the board is epoxy coated and you have to heat the connections real good to get more solder on and have it flow good.
If you go for it yourself, you need the manual or ask and maybe I can scan some things for you.

I pulled and looked at any of the fuses I thought sounded like they had to do with the PKE. I know I looked at the 5A PKE and a 20A power locks one, I didn't look at the RDO BATT one yet. I will put a ohm meter on them tomorrow. I did notice that the fuse contacts looked tarnished, kind of a bronze or copper color. I cleaned them and reinstalled.
Thanks again for all the help. I'm going to play with it some more tomorrow, I'll put a meter on the fuses and hold the door button on the FOB much longer than I have been. Should I disconnect the battery? Or can I pull one of the fuses to the PKE instead to have the same effect? Thanks.
Alright, just wanted to give everyone an update. So I was driving this past weekend and the pke light started flickering as I was driving. I park it for a little while, come back to drive home, and no light! The key fobs still aren't working, but no light. So the next morning I go out there to reprogram it, and the light is back and it hasn't gone off yet. So... what do you guys think? I'm thinking I need to pull the dash pad off and see if there's a loose connection. Well, it's more of a hope that's all it is. Any thoughts?
O.K. put me down as another person with PKE "issues". It quit working about a week ago, so I figure dead bat in PKE changed bat. no differance. I get out the owners man. Try to reprogam. Nope it won't recognize it. Today I came out of work walked up to car and i hear it unlock. Now it works again. Go figure.
