Default Update 3 turbo progress..

well guys here ya go.. I have the headers completely done and welded up all the way, turbo is mounted, wastegate is mounted, and I am now getting ready to move on to the cold side plumbing and intercooler mounting. the Downpipe will be later in the week as I am waiting for my stainless tubing to get here, should be here by wednesday!

so here are the pics.. it seems like a whole lot more to me cause the little work seen here represent MANY Hours of measuring cutting, Drilling, Grinding, welding, and fittment trials.. I wanted to make sure that everything on the engine has appropriate clearance, plug changes are easy, header fitment is easy, access to the wategate for spring changes would be simple, and being able to tighten the manifold bolts and the turbo mounting bolts would be easy.. I am proud to say that i have been able to accomplish that.. I can install the turbo, manifolds, wastegate and midpipe in about 10 minutes including tightening all bolts. it is easier then putting the stock manifolds in..lol

well with no furhter ado.. here are the pics!

Nope.. all primaries are 1 3/4" mid pipe is 2.5" and main merge pip is 3" on passenger side where all the primaries and crossover come together.. it is not convetnional, however it is not a log style either.. all primaries are firing in a fluent direction toward the turbine inlet and I tried to avoid a conglomeration of 90* pipes firing into tubing walls.. so all bends are smooth and transitioned into the 3" merge pipe.. I will likely pull everything off the motor and assemble it out of the car for a clearer picture of what has been built. Just wanted to show fitment for tonight.. too tired to pull it out and reassemble it again.. seems like I've done it 100 times from tacking to welding and fitting.

If anyone is interested, I am planning to build another set in SS for myself and may be selling this set after I use them for mockup on the SS set. the only thing you'd need to do is send me a shorty header to add a V-band flange too for the drivers side. there is some relocating of some things, but should not be too bad. definately not a simple bolt on setup as far as that goes, but the fabricating would be completed. If you went with straight gaseous intercooling on the setup, the outlet can be aimed directly at the TB with no more then a 8" pipe connecting between the turbo outlet and TB. open to Reasonable offers and It would still be a little bit out before I can finish the SS set, so thinking they would be available in like 4 weeks or so. anyways, feel free to ask questions!

Chris,

What are the plans for the down pipe? That was a big pain for my setup. Are you doing 3.5"? Things look pretty good so far. Can't wait to see the final setup.

downpipe should be a breeze... have room for 3.5" but it is gonna be tighter then I'd like... I may go with a piece of oval tubing from burns to get me some room between the heater box and the primaries, but 3" fits awesome.. may run that for the time being.. I think once the wastegate open, thats 3" downpipe and 2" wategate hole.. it should flow a good amount still. Jose made 987 tow the wheels through a 3" downpipe, and thats far beyond my goals, so if it seems to b ea restriction or my numbers fall short, I will address it at that time, but for now and cost and simplicity, 3" may be what I go with. once the motor is running and I can see about how much the motor will twist in the chassis, I may go ahead and step it up to 3.5".. but until i can watch whats going on under the hood.... wanna make sure i don't melt the engine bay with a DP too close to something or put anything in a bind!

I thougth I might find some updates today. Looks f'n sweet man! So what did you have to do about the fit on the last primary? Wastegate is going to sound awesome when you leave it like that with just a little 3" pipe on it....right? What days you working on it this week? I want to get that book from you at some point if thats cool?

Later man,
Ryan

Nice progress, your piping is similar to mine.

How are you gonna address the air to the turbo?

Ryan,

I need your number man.. just realized i do not have it.. im gonna be working on the intercooler tonight..

HJV,

Gonna have to wait to see the finished product, i have a few ideas, but the edge of the shroud will be "modified" and a filter housing will be made from aluminum sheet metal, with 2 filters coming off the end of it. something similar to the ATI Intercooler housing that crosses the top of the shroud on the way to the throttle body. there is about 3"s between the edge of the fan shroud and the aluminum of the radiator to work with, and the radiator may be laid down a bit and the bottom slid forward some to accomodate more room as the IC is only 12" tall and the A/C condensor will be relocated to the rear of the car. we'll see at the end of the night what seems like its gonna work out best!

thanks for looking in all!

where the spare tire is now mounted.. I never run with the spare tire on mainly because i don't take the car on trips and have spare rims and tires at the house, and if i ever take the car to the track it is mainly on a trailer.. got used to breaking and having to go get my truck and car trailer.. besides.. once shes dialed in.. i will likely run race gas which is way too expensive to be driving to and from the track on..lol
