How many miles should I expect before my '93 automatic tranny gives out? I ask this because my extended warranty company is refusing to pay for it - say it's normal wear and tear at 56,000 miles. The band is worn down to the rivets and third and fourth clutches are shot. It has been well maintained and never raced.
Not sure what the service intervial is for the automatic, but I would think that 56k is below the service recommended mileage, check your manual. My 87 has 118k & still going strong (hope I haven't jinx'd myself ) and I had a 94 Camaro go 220k before the trans gave up the ghost.
That's kind of what I figured. The warranty company admits that is premature wear, but if I read the fine print in the contract, nowhere will I find the word "premature". I'm still fighting with them and if they don't at least partially pay for it, I'm going to every auto forum I can find and tell people to avoid this company like the plague.
That is total I have 155k on mine and it still gets scratch in second gear. They are full of it the owners manual does not say replace transmission at 50k miles does it? Tell them to pay or talk to your lawyer for refusing to honor their contract. A good rebuild is gonna cost north of $1k
I am unhappy to report that I have been through 5 (700R4's). The first went out at 50,000 miles (worn 3/4 bands) and GM replaced it under warranty with a black beauty Reman unit. That one lasted till 75,000 miles (broken torque convertor vanes). I had to pay for that one, but got a discount from GM. That one lasted till 94,000 miles (broken torque convertor vanes again). At 108,000 mile I replaced the engine due to a leaking headgasket on drivers side at #7 cylinder. The much stronger engine and a high stall convertor broke the fairly new tranny in two weeks (broken torque convertor vanes again). Then I went with an expensive rebuild from levelten. That one lasted 9 months and 2,000 miles (Heated tranny oil and worn bands n 3/4). They replaced it under warranty. That one lasted 200 miles down the NJ turnpike from the tranny shop when the planterary gear left the case. That was replaced under warranty also. Current tranny is 3 years old and has 5,000 miles on it, mostly to the drag race track and long trips to Carlisle, Pa. Your tranny is covered under your extended warranty, thats what you paid for. It is not like brakes or tires. Be strong, they are like any insurance company that tries to intimidate the customer to lower the loss of profits....
Good luck Chris....been there done that.....
Thanks for your replies. Yes, I and the shop (EM) are still working on the insurance company. Hopefully, we can work something out - I miss my car. Up until now, they have been very good. They've paid out more than twice as much as I paid for the warranty so why can't they fork over another $1000! Will let you know what happens. One way or the other, I should have the car back soon with a 2800 stall and shift kit.
Good news. Reached a resolution with the insurance company. They tape all of their phone conversations, so Merle had them go back and listen to the one where the adjuster told him to go ahead and pull the tranny and take it apart without my permission. Caught them in a lie, so they are going to pay for all the labor, I'll pay for parts. It's not great, but at this point, I just want my car back.
Lichen,
This is an insurance ploy.
They say no, no way, you are getting nothing, and then, grudgingly, agree to pay for a percentage when in fact they should be paying for the whole thing.
Did you buy the insurance from a car dealership. If you did, talk to them also. If that does not work, talk to a lawyer, they will come around in a hurry.
Good luck
Fred
