Default Windshield - What's a fair price

Have been quoted anywhere from $550 to $650 to replace the windshield in my 95 Convertible.

I took a rock right in my line of sight and it caused a dime sized chip.

Thanks, Randy

Have you checked with your insurance company? I had the same problem and it was covered under comprehensive. No deductible. I requested and recieved PPG glass along with new weatherstrip and exterior trim. The bill was 1,100.00.

$500-$600 is good range. Make sure they have they have the new gasket before they start. There was another recent thread on having a windshield replaced, and the gasket was after market and leaked. Specify OEM gasket. glassman can give you more hints.

Check with your ins. co., I know in Florida and other states your ins. has to pay for the new window. Even if you only have liability.

i had mine replaced for (installed) 180 bucks. you might want to call the glass company you plan on using and see if they can get you a used piece, they are much cheaper.

WRONG WRONG NO insurance company pays for nor are they liable to pay for ANY damage whether or not the windshield is damaged in the drivers critical vision area UNLESS you have comprehensive coverage on your auto policy!!! (sorry for the runon)

i wouldnt put a used piece of glass in any car. at least not one that im going to keep. the w/s is structural to the car....ever notice a car thats had a front end collision and the w/s is broken even though nothing has touched it. thats because when the frame twists and transmitts stress, it snaps the glass.
when you cut a w/s from its urethane bed, you transmit stress. it may not break immediately, but it is weakened. then, if its weakened, and you have an accident, the structual impact that the glass is designed to absorb is gone, which in turn allows more damage to occur.
just like a snell rating on a motorcycle helmet. they are rated for single impacts. even if you cant see any cracks or damage on a helmet, if its ever even just been dropped, its supposed to be replaced.
thats just my opinion based on twelve years of owning a glass business.
by the way, my cost on a w/s is $79 for an oem piece and $149 for the oem moulding kit.

My total was right at $450. This was for a professional installation of new glass and top/side weatherstrip.

My car has had 6 winshields over 13 years. the last one I had them take the old one out so I could clean up the posts, weld up all the screw holes from the previous trim replacements, repaint everything before installing a new glass, weather strip, and new trim. Cost was about $600.00.

P.O.S. still leaks water, even with new targa top and weather strip.

Have you considered one of the companies that repair windshields on the car. I had a similiar chip in the windshield of my GMC pickup. I called my ins. agent and he recommended I try the repair and there would be no deductable. New windshield would have cost me the $250 deductable. That was over two years ago....glass repaired and no problems.
