I found one of my actuators hanging in the front and found the gear and actuator are broken. I have a new one coming but what is the procedure for setting them up? How does the cap attach and should the gear be turned one way or the other before caping it? Or one the other hand does it adjust itself. Which way is stiffer clockwise or counterclockwise? Thanks in advance for your input.
First off, the actuator is held in place by aspring steel C-clip It's a bit less than the diameter of the actuator. Look at the actuator on the other side and you will see it at the bottom of the actuator. It fits into three slots around the base of the actuator body.
The wire harness coming out of the top of the actuator should point toward the rear of the car and just slightly toward the inside. It simply sits down over the shock and the c-clip keeps it in place.
The shock gear only turns part way and there is no need to set the gear in any specific position. The FX3 system does a self-check to make sure the actuators are working, the shock gear travels its full range and the controller is working. The shocks are then set to whatever position the selector switch is at.
After the check, the "Service Ride Control Light" goes out if all is OK. If there is a problem, the SRC light stays on and the system sets the good shocks/actuators to the "Tour" setting and the selector switch on the console is disabled.
The FX3 system also uses vehicle speed to make minute adjustments to the shocks. The settings overlap somewhat in terms of stiffness. for example the Tour setting at 70MPH is actually a stiffer setting than the Performance setting at 35.
If the SRC light is not on, it may be a bad bulb or a previous owner could have removed the bulb. With an actuator removed from the shock, there should be a SRC code 14 (right front time out) or 21 (left front time out).
Hello Redeasysport,
I am wondering if you would be interested in selling your broken actuator? I would be interested in buying it if just the plastic gear is broken and the actuator is in otherwise good condition. I replace the plastic gears with billet aluminum which is much stronger. The plastic gears in the actuators often break and are the cause of many SRC lights on the dash. If you are interested please let me know.
Sincerely,
Aaron
