I'm running an '89 Corvette 5.7 TPFI. Last Saturday, while pulling out onto the street, the car started to sputter as if it were running out of fuel. (it has a full tank - filled 3-4 days prior) It seemed to me that it was having some sort of fuel delivery issue. To make a long story short, I just spent $730.00 for my shop to replace one bad injector (plus towing). ouch! He also told me that the O2 sensor was not putting out any data. I told him I could replace that on my own. So then he tried to sell me on a tune up. I said bag it... I can do that as well. So anyway, I'm seriously bummed over this because the car is running the same as it did before it went into the shop. I spent $730.00 for what seems like nothing.
What would cause an extremely bad idle? ...and sputter? It feels like I am sitting in a washer machine. I need to talk to this guy tomorrow and ask him if they checked to see if this car was running on all 8. lol... ack. Would a bad O2 sensor throw it that much out of whack?
I would get a complete diagnostic by a professional before doing anything else. Then, give him back his injector suppository style..
Throwing any codes?
I would make sure the gas cap is on tight.
The o2 sensor can make the car run bad but not work never .
Check the vacume lines on the rear drivers side by the distributor.
I don't know of any real mechanic that would replace one injector on that engine.
Sounds like Barbra Strisand(BS).
You have an L98 9 injectors and your worst night mare to replace.
When does it run bad?
Hot ?
Cold?
When did you replace plugs?
When was the fuel filter replaced?
I think he might have meant he injected you .
Let us know!

Could be many things- bad IAC,TPS,MAF,ignition module,computer, etc. to start with- are there any codes being thrown? check for vacuum leaks, etc. A bad o2 sensor should generate a check engine light and set a trouble code. My simular trouble was a bad IAC. But a scan tool and factory service manual are a must! tossing money at your car for a fix is not the best way to get along with your ride.
I don't go to roadside $hitshops anymore for that matter. AKA tire stores. Now I go to a local GM dealership since my good friend just recently become a service advisor there and his cousin has been a tech there for almost 2 years already. Neverthless, I'd still go to dealerships now since they will warranty my water pump for life.
Thanks for all the replys. Straight off of my invoice from last night...
labor = $441.46
parts = $146.89
towing = $74.00
+sales tax and EPA
He said the car was not throwing any codes. I just talked to the guy this morning and expressed my disapointment... and told him I was feeling "rather sore". So, he's coming out to my office right now to pick up the car and run 2 days worth of diagnostics for free. (I feel like I have already paid for 2 days worth anyway)
Well lets hope he actually does some diagnosing. If you comes back saying more injectors are needed, Id start throwing stuff at him. It would probably be cheaper for me to fly out there and do them in an hour lol.
