Default timing issues

Ok got the motor back together for the first time since the overhaul. Put the distributor in and have done everything to get it to time. I have had it sound like it would start I have had it back fire like I was 180 out but never started yet. I smell gas and I have spark I bring it up on TDC compession stroke check #1 hole to feel the piston up put the plug back in and it will not start. Any ideas? I pulled the motor to replace the oil pan and redo the heads. It has a new intake on but that is about it. Everything else is the same as when it was running. Help?

With the piston on the compression stroke (thumb in the spark plug hole) continue rotating the engine until the timing mark on the damper aligns with the 10* BTDC mark. Then, rotate the distributor body until the rotor points at the terminal for the #1 plug wire. You may have to install the cap and mark on the distributor body where the #1 plug tower is and then remove the cap to turn the distributor body to line up. If all the plug wires are installed in order and with the EST wire connected, get in the car and fire it up. It will start.

RACE ON!!!
