I have an 84 with the auto transmission, 72,000 miles. It runs great all the time except for tonight. The tranny will not shift out of first, and yes I have it in drive. The fluid level is fine and it is not burnt. I have checked the TV cable adjustment and it is good. Any ideas? Time for a rebuild? Any info would be great.
Thanks
It it"s possible you shelled the teeth off of the plastic governor driven gear, but given it's age, I'd bet it's close to R.I.P. time. Pull the governor and check it out.
Thanks CFI for the info. Just check the TV adjustment to be sure and took it for a ride, this time it went through all the gears but it seemed to slip in first? Kinda like a snowmobile takes off?? If you know what I mean? It revs high and then takes off, good through all the other gears but seems to rev higher between shifts.
Thanks for the help
It sounds like is is done. If you decide to rebuild it you may want to consider starting with a later model core. The are cheap and will hold up much better than a rebuild on your stock 84 unit. If you need details I can list them. late 87-92 are great to start with.

BE EXTREMELY careful with TV adjustment; search for my posting in archives; steps detailed exactly by the specialist who rebuilt mine.
I would not drive it until you DO check that; if you DO, I think that snowmobile sound is playing $$$ notes.
