My '86 seems to have just developed a concerning rattle. As I acclerate hard through second and into third gear. Its deffinatly coming from the engine.
The engine (I thought) was good only done 91K.
Can anyone help as to what it might be and the fix / cost?
Thanks
It does not sound like detonation, which can be very loud when it's bad, if the sound has just started. Detonation is usually heard when the engine lugs at low RPM's or at Low/mid-rpms when under full throttle.
The engine would be torquing hard under full power so I would first check motor mounts and transmission mounts. Then check all accessory brackets for something just loose from vibration. Could headers be hitting something if the engine is moving? Same for steering. I think the first check is whether the engine is stable or not. One simple way is just to gun the engine with the hood up and see how much movement occurs.
The water pump going out can also be noisy but it would be at part throttle too rather than just full throttle.
If it was a suspension piece, I would think you would hear a "clunking" noise and even feel it when it moved rather than a rattle. Steering should also be affected.
Should not be too expensive to fix but could be hard to find.
