Default Need some help people

I haven't been around for the last year and a half or so because I hd a stroke early last year and am finally at the point where I can drive my LT1 a little even though my right arm and hand don't work as they used to, which was the first time the car had been driven since my stroke. I'm still dealing with the problem I had then - rough running, backfiring, power down, and all that, and only when hot, above 130 or so. I had one experience where I got a code 45 as the car slowed down to 35, popping and banging, on the freeway to boot. Since then nothing has showed. I tried to get a mechanic to fix it and after replacing the opticrap and purging the fuel system to no avail had the gall to tell me I needed injectors and cats to resolver the issue. The injectors were installed new 4 years ago and I doubt if I've put 15000 miles on them. The cats may be an issue as they are the originals, but I thing the problem will show at all temps in one or the other is bad. I'm thinking its either the egr or an oxygen sensor as one of the code tables I looked at (came with my code reader) gave those as possibilities. I am at my wits end (the half thats left) on this - I really want to get on the road again and hope the problem can be fixed with one hand. I'm open to your thoughts ....

First off, it's great to hear you are doing better.

It sounds like you may have an o2 sensor problem.

Best of luck with the Vette, and most of all your recovery.

Sorry to say, but it still sounds like the OPTI! Heat was one of the big symptoms that I had. Are you confident that the mechanic is not just emptying your wallet?

Sorry I don't have the answer to your post. I thought I would just try to keep it at the top of the pile.

Sounds like you need that feeling we all have had when our cars are running like we want them to.

Hope your car is an auto.

I would start with a good tune up, to include O2 sensors, then go from there.

Default Welcome to my world.

I had a T-I-A one year ago last November , left hand still a little mushie.
It does take time ( although it will seam like forever ) but you will get better. When I took the vette out, the first left hand turn I made I almost fell into the passenger seat. Now if we could figure out a way to shift with my right-- and stear with your left we would have have something!! ( I'd like to get the seeya smiley to wave with it's right!)

wow... sorry to hear about your TIA, but I am even happier to hear of your great recovery!

Your problems... first off, find a better mechanic. He is throwing money at it - your money.

I agree, there is a chance the new opti is bad, and an even bigger chance the new opti is still the old opti. backfiring is a sure sign that the opti is hosed... OR...

The ignition module... or... my favourite? a bad coil wire.

bad injectors will cause a lot of problems, but it won't cause backfiring. I like the O2 suggestion.

What year and how many miles are on the car?

Get that car on a scope and do a full diagnostic.

Good to hear you are back in the vette. Keep it up!

That the o2 sensors might be part, if not all, the problem. I even put my vette up on ramps and slid under to see if I could get a left hand on them - the right side is ok, the left side I couldn't even see the thing. Don't think I'll do that again until my wife is there to help me up - when I say my right side is partially paralyzed, I mean the leg too. TIAs are tempoary, strokes can be permanent.
Opti is dubious - it was replaced about 100 miles ago, although that was not the problem. I love my 92, so I will replace the o2 sensors and the egr, get the cats checked and replace them if necessary, and we'll see what happens next (tickets don't count).
