Default Transmission leak

I have a 1991, L98, automatic that I posted a question about last week regarding a transmission leak. I had changed the fluid and filter then a leak developed a the torque converter access cover. I removed the pan again and tryed a different filter from Advanced Auto. Much to my surprise the new off brand filter was about a 1/4" shorter than the GM part. When I put the pan back on low and behold, no interference. I refilled the pan, let it run for a short period to verify fluid level, then drove the car. After driving around for about half an hour rechecking a couple of times, the leak is gone. Just thought I would let you guys know in case anyone had similar problems. I guess the old saying, "Keep your GM car, all GM" isn't always the best case. At least it wasn't during the remedy to this problem.

wow. sounds like an error on GMs part... either they sold you the wrong part or it was mispackaged!

Whatever the case may be I am glad you have it running again!

I have used Advance Auto, Autozone and NAPA and have had some very good successes.

Actually, according to the service manual, and the instructions in the GM kit, it stated that 87 and earlier years may need a different pan that was somewhat deeper due to the new filter design. Immediately, I thought the transmission had been replaced. Upon checking the numbers on the transmission I verified that it was the original, so I'm not sure what the problem is, or was. Next time I will just take it to my buddy who is the manager at Jiffy Lube. They have a slick machine that basically gives it a transfussion. They just tap in to the upper line from the radiator and start pumping new fluid through it. It would have been easier than laying under the car, TWICE, and performing this procedure. The service costs $60.00, but by the time I bought two filters, and ten quarts of transmission fluid I just about paid for it anyway. I'm just glad it wasn't the pump seal, then I would have had to pull the transmission.
