My 86 convertible driver side headlight stuck open last night. From checking the forum, I was familiar with the procedure to use the manual opening ****, so I gave it a twist. I had removed the key, but didn't disconnect the grey wire coupling on the outboard side of the light. As soon as I tweaked the **** at the end of the motor, the headlight flipped into the closed position.
I checked the operation this afternoon...this time the same headlight stuck in the closed position. Once again, I gave the **** a very slight touch and the headlight jumped open. I subsequently cycled the lights with no problem.
I've checked the forum advice regarding bushing repair and replacement, but this seems different. The **** seems to need only a little nudge and then the light flips into position. And the puzzling part is that it did this with the key removed.

Any suggestions?
1) The part about key being removed being puzzling - why? The headlights will operate normally with the key removed, so why would you find it puzzling???
2) The contacts in the motor are getting dirty, or mis-adjusted. I had this happen before. I removed the motor, dis-assembled it, cleaned, adjusted the contacts, and re-lubricated the motor and it has worked for several years with no issues.
Thanks...I should have been more specific on the headlight rotating with the key removed. The headlight switch was already pushed in. However, from what you describe, rotating the **** probably improved the contact. Thanks for the advice. I'll add another item to my Saturday worklist!
Don't feel bad, they do odd things at times. One of mine did not retract one evening, then when I come down the next morning, it was down. Sometime during the night it made enough contact to reverse and close.
I know I am going to have to re-open it soon and clean/lubricate it again.
