i just read through the tech section here i did not know was here under other drop down but how hard is it to do how many hours would the dealer charge for ? i take what time the dealer calls for and double it and usaly that is how long i plan for doing it myself somtimes when they call for 4 hours i have done it in one lol musta been a good day for me lol they charge like eighty bucks an hour how much do the machanics actuly get out of that 10 bucks a hour?? that sucks any other tricks or things to make it go faster easer would be greatly apreciated should put spell check on here lol thank you guys
If the know feels "mushy" when turning it back and forth the problem is with the nylon bushings. Rotate both headlight ***** to get the feel; the headlight should move immediately (though very slightly) when you rotate the **** in either direction.
You will need a long torx or ball driver to access two of the screws holding the assy in place.
Then a drift would be useful in removing the drift pin that holds the headlight to the motor shaft.
Once the motor assy. cover has been removed you will need work on sliding the large plastic gear over the worm gear but it will come. File a flat on the large nylon gear to assist in installing it.
You can purchase the bushings from MAD, Eckler's, Corvette Central or even from HomeDepot like I did. If you go to HomeDepot, ask for item number 859609.
You will need six of the nylon spacers to repair both lights. Good luck!
does home depot have all the parts gears big small? and spacers bushings? and if you have all the part #s or does item # 859609 come with it all ? thank you very much

If it's just your bushings, the nylon spacers from HomeDepot all the parts you'll need. The rest of the repair is labor intensive, but you can do it yourself with tools you probably already have in your garage.
Since you indicated you have an '86 (no bushings used in that design) I'd suspect the gears. If you end up needing gears, you'll have to get those from MAD, Eckler's, Corvette Central or one of the other Corvette speciality catalogs.
The link I sent you details how to remove the headlight bucket, open the motor housing and replace the gears and bushings. You can run a search in the TechTips section on this forum to get detailed instructions, too.
If you go with Eckler's for parts, the ’84-’87, replacement gears are PN 26670 (small gear) and A3526 (large gear.)
Good luck and holler back at us if you need any further help. I did this repair last summer using the HomeDepot bushings and my lights have worked like new since.
