Default Fuel Problem

Well, I just got my car back from the shop. In a nutshell 84 Crossfire wouldn't get fuel. Shop diagnosed bad pump (which was my guess) and while they were there, I had them replace the sending unit (which wasn't working either), and the fuel filter.

Trying to get it home rfom the shop...

It started up and ran great. No worries. I let it idle fro 2-3 minutes as I swapped stuff between my cars, then I started home. I got about two miles (stop and go traffic, lights, ect) and I could feel it losing response with the gas peddle. I was able to keep it running by feathering it until I could switch lanes and get to the shoulder, then it quit.

I gave it about 30 seconds and it fired right back up. It seemed to be idling fine and was taking a load in neutral, so I put it in gear and tried it out. Seemed ok. Not particularly wanting to be strandded on the road, I started home again. Two more miles.... same stuff.

I finally figured that when it started to act up, I tromped on it, which made it quit. Then, I could put it in neutral as I was still coasting, fire it back up, then put it back in gear and go another two miles.

If I didn't know that it was just changed, it's acting to me just like a clogged fuel filter. Is there someway they could have screwed up the install that would be causing the problem?? Or, my other thought... could the system have sucked a piece of dirt? If so, how can I go about trying to clean it?

could have messed the install up.I had one done a few years ago and the sock fell off the pump and it acted like that.
You can pull and inspect the fuel pump very easily it only take a few minute to pull the back fuel filler panel(few torx screws) gas cap, bladder and few hoses and bolts.I have done so many now it only takes me about 15 minutes to throw a new one in.There again,if you paid someone you might want to take it back and let them check it.

I wouldn't expect a missing sock to make it run as you describe. Unless a missing sock allowed the pump to suck up garbage from the bottom of the tank. I agree that it sounds like a blockage of some sort. Just because they charged you for a new fuel filter, doesn't mean they installed one. Crawl under the car and see if it looks new. They could have reused the old clogged sock, too. There are several ways you can check fuel flow at various points in the fuel system. Probably the first thing to do is hook up a pressure gauge and go for a drive. If that pans out, check the screens on top of both injectors.

RACE ON!!!
