Well I took my car, a 96 LT1 to a shop and told em about the EGR code (P1400 I think) and the guy didnt seem to terribly thrilled to try and fix it. He said that many times people bring cars in for EGR codes and replacing the valve does not fix teh problem and then teh people ar emad because they have bought a part that they do not need. I cant afford to wast money on someyhing that wont help me out. And to make matters worse on my way home today I noticed a burning oil smell and a little white smoke coming out from the rear drivers dide of the engine. Does any one here have any idea what this could mean? The car has 68,000 miles and has never had any other trouble. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your mechanic is right. You should be pleased that he didn't just do the repair you asked for and take your money. A code pointing at a device, doesn't necessarily mean that the device is bad. It merely means that a code was sent FROM that device, but not the cause. Buy a Factory Service Manual (click HERE) and follow the trouble shooting charts for that code. The various tests should lead you to the cause and tell you how to test the components so you don't waste time and money replacing good parts. You MAY have stumbled upon a good mechanic.

RACE ON!!!
