Default 700R4 1-2 shift is mushy.

Sorry to ask this on the Corvette forum, but I get so much good info on my other cars here. I had to give it a shot.

I have a 70 Chevy C20 with a 700R4 behind a modified 67 big block Olds motor. When I had the tranny rebuilt, I told them it needed to handle about 500HP and 550 ft/lbs of torque in that heavy beast. It worked great for a while and after turning it off and back on it didn't perform as well. The 1-2 shift is a mushy slide into second shift. The 2-3 is still crisp. What should I look at before bringing it to the shop and getting the same old story? I have checked fluid and it is still red and not smelly. I have adjusted the TVI cable several different ways. I have also checked and changed the filter.

Thanks in advance.

It did work great for a while. It would bark second and chirp third under moderate throttle pressure. Not too impressive but those 33's sounded like a barking dog.

Is it possible the accumulator spring could break or loose tension? Can I look at this from the outside?
