Default 1987 Climate Control Problem

This is on bastet44's coupe.

It has electronic climate control, C68.

The compressor won't kick in, and I suspect it's because the freon is low, however, the heater door won't open correctly and I cannot get into the head unit's diagnostics.

According to the manual, pressing the rear defroster and the manual fan up button at the same time should enter the system into diagnostics mode. However, that does not happen.

The head unit appears to be working ok. When the buttons are pressed, things happen... fan changes speed, ducts change, etc, but it just won't go into diagnostics and the compressor won't kick in.

At this time, I am not in a hurry to spend 2 days tearing into the dash to repair/replace any damaged hardware.

I have heard a lot of problems about the CC, but I have never heard about a unit that won't go into diagnostics mode...

Ideas?? Thoughts?? Suggestions? Thanks!!!

On the '87, to get the C68 system into diagnostic mode, you need to press the Ext. Temp button and the Auto Fan button at the same time. (a "minor" documentation error which was pointed out to me by Gordon Killebrew when I attended his C4 classes a few weeks ago)

HMmmm..They may be different on his, but on my '91, you only press and hold the up and down fan buttons for 5 seconds, and it enters into the diagnostics.

I had a problem with mine as well and had to do some experimenting
in order to find the right combination to get to the diagnostic codes.
Try "Ext. Temp" button....hold in
then press and release "Auto" button worked for me.

ground the presure switch with the key on but engine off, and if the compressor cuts in its probably too low on gas, if it doesnt have at least 6psi on the low side it cant drag the oil around the system to lubricate so it wont let the compressor engage.

I just found this thread!

Apparently, it was low on coolant... why it didn't throw a code is beyond me...

No low gas codes until '90 (which for that year and beyond you can pick up on a scanner or through the Speedo or through the Dash Assembly). There is a code for the temp door motor though. Enter diagnostics and see if it shows anything other than "00".
