I just bought a Garmin Streetpilot 2610 to cure my lack of direction. I go to plug it in and the Cigarette lighter doesn't work.
I checked the fuses and none of them are blown (unless I missed one...they aren't marked which makes it harder). I guess the next step is to tear apart the center console. Any advice before I get knee deep in plastic parts?
On my 86, the courtesy lights and the lighter are on the same fuse. So, if the lighter doesn't work and the lights don't either, right away I suspect it's the fuse.
If the courtesy lights work, but not the lighter, then I know it's the lighter connections or the element.
Get a VOM and check the lighter socket one in the center and one on the casing.Sometime (especially if they are used) corrosion will not give a good contact. Might need to replace it but you can try some sand paper on a stick to clean it up.On my 93 the owners manual tells you how to acceses the plug under the console to pull it back into the armrest.
I have the same one, the 2610 and I had problems with my vette as well. Wiggle it around, insert it several times. I even used some wd 40 on mine. Bottom line the connections didnt work very well with the vette but it did finally start working.

On my '92, there are two small fuseblocks up under the passenger side dash more or less burried in the wiring as well as the one on the side of the dash. The fuse for my cigarette lighter was up under there... and it's a SOB to get to. Not sure if your '85 is the same.
