Default J55 upgrade ?'s

I'm considering doing the J55 upgrade to my '88 vert. The car gets autocrossed regularly and and I'd like to do some more track days. Currently have standard 12" with EBC green pads, DRM bias spring, and upgraded fluid. Managed to boil the fluid once, and cracked a rotor (It had been turned once). I have 17" wheels and Z52 suspension.

Will the J55 require any mods to my master cylinder or ABS system?
Is this just a rotor and bracket change or will the caliper and spindle and to be changed also? Any needed changes out back?

Thanks

No mods to the master cylinder or ABS system are required. It is suggested that you install the Doug Rippie brake bias spring in the master cylinder to increase the pressure sent to the rear brakes.

This requires rotors, brackets and calipers. Nothing changes on an 1988 spindle. The factory brackets bolt directly to the spindle.

The pads are the same between the smaller calipers and the J55 calipers...

Do a price/performance comparison between the
J55 and the C5 upgrade. See the C5 part list here
for a starting point
http://superchevyperformance.com/misc/c5brakes.asp

You will also need an adapter. I am pleased with ones
I bought last year from Electro-Dynamics. There
appears to be other choices these days, judging by
postings.

Also consider that wheels may be required.

The C5 upgrade will require a non-factory adapter, the J55 will not, that is a cost savings. Ed Salinas (search) sells C5 adapters on this forum, at a better price than Electro-Dynamics.

But...with the cost savings of not having the bracket comes a price, the rotors for the J55 setup are more expensive than the C5 rotors.

One other thing you will need for the J55 upgrade is the caliper retaining pins/washers/clips. They run about $15 each.

This is a key point. Brackets we buy once, while
rotors get replaced on a regular basis.
