Default Opti change question...timing?

I am in the process of changing the opti on my 94 LT1. I just removed the opti last night and see the notch or key in the case and timing cover so it will allign when I put the new one back on. This will align the assembly/case. The input shaft appears to be just splines with no orientation or aligning feature. My question is, when I put the new one in how does the opti know where the timing is and where the engine is to tell what spark plug to fire? I'm not sure how this thing works.

If you look closer, there is a slotted keyway in the splined shaft. Unless you force it on, it will only go on one way.

Thanks STL94LT1. I didn't notice that the first time I looked at it. I just took another look at it and saw the keyway.

Take the old spline out of the old opti and use it to align you new one.Stick it in and visualize the angle( O'Clock) that the new opti will need to be set to and adjust it.It makes the line up process easier. When properly lined up and installed the opti will "pop" in place with a decent sound as the opti hits the timing cover flushly. If you dont hear it I would try again to make sure it is seated. There have been a rash of mis installed Optis lately(Including mine) that were thought to be in right.

Another tip. If the opti does not seat flush to the block, then you have not installed it correctly.

The tip! Do not try to bring the opti flush with block by tightening the bolts that secure the opti!!!
