Default Inspection Rip Off

My 92 needs an inspection sticker. I paid and it failed. They charged me $49.00 to hook up to the machine to diagnose my problem (I didn't know I had one). The machine said I had to buy and EGR valve for $98.00 more dollars and then I could pass. I think this is a rip off. My car has been running fine. Is this just another way for someone else to make $$$$ when they see us coming? Thanks for reading about my recent frustration!

Is your SES light on? Even if it's not, you may want to pull the codes and see what's going on. Just my .02.

I think the car will run better with an EGR that does not work. It won't pass smog, but it will run good.

If it legitimately failed, $98 to get it to pass is not too bad.

It may have an old code that the EGR didn't work or wasn't within parameters for even just a few seconds, which could have happened a year ago or longer.

It doesn't mean the EGR isn't working. You should undo the battery first to clear the codes, then drive it for awhile. You have to have a certain number of clean starts on the computer before it'll pass their diagnostic test.

Check your stored codes. Use a paper clip to jump "A" to "G" on your ALDL (ignition off). Turn ignition to the RUN position (do not start the car). The digital portion of your dash will run through the stored codes - no, you won't have to count flashes. Post back and tell us what you come up with. One more thing, when you start the vette, does the SES light come on then go out when the engine fires?

Amy - email me at abbogus@yahoo.com. I have a document that will make reading those codes as described by Steel Blue 91 much easier.

Remember, too, that a code for a device doesn't necessarily mean that it's the device that's bad. Don't just throw money at it.
