I have a 86 Vette that I need to change the brake booster on, I am just wondering if someone could help me out and give me any tips or tricks on how to get the old one out. Any info would be of great help.
I'm an accountant and swapped out my bad unit for a new unit in my garage using the 85 GM service manual. Lots of sweat and frustration, but "got her done".
Not easy, that's why techs $ demand in my opinion, is reasonable. If I had it do over again, buy the part and let a tech do the work.
For me, sorta like going to an Auto Zone employee, to prepare your tax return!
very simple job. unbolt master cylinder (leave lines on) and pull forward about5-6" . disconnect vacuum line front of booster. Go under dash and remove lower panel. pull pin and washer retaining the pushrod and lift it off of brake pedal pivot. Next is the only difficult part and is relatively easy with a ball swivel, 12" extension and 13mm socket. Remove the 2 nuts retaining the booster (either side of the brace in front of the brake pedal) Lift booster out. Reverse to install. measure the booster pushrod to master cyl mounting surface to make sure it is the same dimension as the one being replaced to avoid excessive pedal travel or brake drag. Good luck.

Remember to reset the cruise and stop light switches on the pedal bracket under the dash also. Easy to do, press brake in, slide the two switches forward, release brake pedal, it automatically adjusts them for you when it shoves them back. At least that how it worked on a '89
