Default Is this normal for a 700R4?

Once the tranny's in 2nd gear, it won't downshift into first under WOT. Shouldn't it downshift to 1st around 20-25 mph? It's not a major problem, but when I need to get into it at about 20, I have to shift it into 1st.

Indeed it should downshift even at moderate throttle, at least mine does (did).

maybe your tv cable needs adjusting. it's easy to do, might try it and see if it helps.

Here's a good explanation, troubleshooting, and adjustment instructions:

It's for 4L60, but basics are the same.

when the set procedure has been followed should the cable be tight or should there be some side to side play?

When the cable adjustment is done correctly, with the throttle hels wide open the cable should be taut, no slack.

Should the slider on the tv cable be set as far back (towards rear of car) as it will go? My slider is out about 3/8's of an inch right now.

I went ahead and adjusted the TV cable per the above website. The shifts feel too hard to me now. When downshifting at low RPM's and speeds, it bolts into the lower gear and when downshifting into first it feels like it's stuttering a little. Am I probably on my way to the closest tranny shop?

The slider also stays back and doesn't click into a different position when the throttle is pulled back all the way.
