I just had my '93 A4 tranny rebuilt. Heavy duty components, shift kit and 2500 stall converter. Do I need a tranny cooler or is the factory one sufficient. I plan on doing a little racing, but not much. Just concerned about the hot Arizona summers.
Yes, and I recommend the B&M stacked style.
Also, Moreperformance sells a Ultradyne? and it is nice and thin, but looks like it will be a really great fitting cooler.
PS, my 93 with 2800rpm and 3.75's has one. No guage, but when I put my Raytek laser on it, it is usually around 170 degrees with my 24000GVW cooler.
I hope others can express there temps, especially the guys that have factory guages for transmission temps, and with high stalls etc
I would get one, the fella that rebuilt mine wouldn't warranty the transmission if I didn't let him put a heavy duty cooler in mine. Was considered part of the rebuild price....
The factory cooler thats in the radiator is very small. My BeCool has a pretty good sized one in there, but since heat is the trannys biggest enemy, besides my right foot, i would cooll it as many ways as I can. They are cheap, definitely compared to a transmission rebuild.
ANYONE with a 700r4/4L60 needs a tranny cooler, even if you dont have mods. It'll double the life of that transmission.
Thats what the ole redneck said about mine, that and the fact the radiator cooler was crap. He put a 2 row HD cooler in the very front. Trust me he hated pulling the shroud, but even took the time to clean out between the radiator and whateverthe ac cooler is called.
