How much trouble is it to get to and change a starter in an 87. I am no mechanic but if I get some help from you guys maybe I can do this. Is it on the passenger side and how hard is it to get to?
Get car high in air (safely!) , disconnect battery, lie on back, disconnect wires at starter , undo 2 holding bolts and the brace if still fitted.Support large heavy starter and remove forward from bellhousing .
Install in reverse
When you pull the starter, check to see if there are any shims on the mounting surfaces. You may need them on the replacement starter to get the proper match between starter gear and the flywheel.
Thanks Jake - another question - is there any way to check to confirm the starter is bad while still on the car - or do I just need to remove it and take it over to the parts store?

You can take a long screwdriver and touch the tip to the 12 volt terminal and the 'S' terminal at the same time. This by-passes the solenoid and, if the starter is still good, the engine will turn over.
If it does turn over, I'd then suspect the solenoid is bad. Exhaust heat kills them.
If you have to replace either or both of them, pick up a solenoid heat shield at the same time - AutoZone carries them. They're about $5 or so and bolt right to the solenoid. There are also full heat shields available that cover both the starter and the solenoid.
