Default real basic questions

I'm just getting into these questions. Let me bounce some numbers/ideas off you all.

Right now, my 427 normally-aspirated is making ~550hp at the flywheel. If I want to make ~750hp then shoot for ~6psi boost?

The 427 has 165psi cold cranking compression, 10.6:1 static compression ratio, 230/236 duration cam with LSA=112. It's all forged bottom end, Dart block, aluminum heads, runs nice & cool now at ~180 degrees.

ATI has a kit, PN 1GB212-D1 intercooled D-1SC which is spec'd to make ~10psi on a stock 350. Would that be ~8psi on my 427? Is that too much?

Let me know what you'd change about all that. Thanks.

Dave,

For the power gain you would only need about 5 pounds of boost so 6 would put you there.

750/550 =1.3636 which is about 5.35 pounds of boost.

I would say the ATI kit would fit the bill. What you would or could do is just pulley down with theintercooler they have you may not have to do that as they generally drop about 2 pounds of boost.

Your safe with the forged bottom end. You will just like everyone here need to make sure you have plenty of fuel and that you watch your spark knock, get a fuel pressure gauge and a boost gauge so that you can see what is or isn't going on.

i'm sure a few of the other folks will chime in as well

Also check with Greg at www.blowerworks.net he can perhaps help you with any needs you have as well.

Hope this helps

Mo

Mo, thanks for the feedback. I will contact the expert you mentioned. I like to take my time and start with very general and continue to narrow in on the specifics. One thing I've noticed in the threads in this section is it sounds like the "mistake" newbies make is not buying a good enough intercooler. So, maybe doing some research into that would make my initial setup a lot closer to what I will ultimately want. Thanks again.

Dave, make your first stop with Greg at Blowerworks. You may or may not need/want the intercooler ? i.e. Greg has a suplimental injection system that can cool the air/fuel as good oir better than an intercooler and maybe you can avoid the smaller pulley and related risks. i.e. a smaller pulley will make the SC, belt, and acc work harder; increased wear/risk. Injection supliment would allow you to go right from the pump to intake, simplified plumbling, less weight, more airflow thru both radiator and intake.
Best bet talk to Greg B/4 you invest.
Good luck
Rick
