On my way into work this morning my 94 just stopped running. I have never had any problems with the car cutting out before or running ruff. I have 22,000 miles.
I was traveling down a bumpy road and it started to loose power and than quit. I coasted to a parking lot. The service engine light was on and check gauges light also. Can I some how get the code from the computer or do I need to take it into a shop? Also does turning the key 20-25 times erase the error code?
I was able to get the motor to start but than it would just cut out again. I than raised the hood and moved the battery cable connections and alternator connections to see if possible they were just loose. Tried to start again and it did then the volts meter went from 14.4 to 12.2 and than cut out again. Now the service engine, check gauges and battery lights were all on. I moved cables again and all error lights went out.
I got the car restarted and drove it into work another 5 miles with no problems.
Even thought I checked for loose battery cables isn’t it true that you can remove the battery after the car is running and if your alternator is good it will keep running? Or is it a specific cable that can only be removed + or -?
Did you ever see the dash display "SYS" while you were driving ? Mine did this shortly before the battery went out. And also, how old is your battery ?
We’ll I finally got out of my 5 hour meeting and finally got a chance to look at the replies and then trouble shoot the problem. I started the car again I found that the volt reading was jumping from 13 to 15.9. I then checked the connection with someone watching the volts readings. When I tighten the ground the reading stabilized at 14.3-14.5 volts.
So do you think this it with the new information above?
I think this is all it was thanks for everyone help.
My 86 did the same thing a couple weeks back. It turned out to be a small amount of corrosion under the dang flat GM battery post on the positve side. Scraped it clean and all has been well since.
