When the headlights are turned on, the tail lights and parking lights don't come on. All four brake lights come on when using the brakes, but no tailights. Any idea why this might be happening? This is an '87 coupe.
If it were the front parking lights that go out with the headlights on, that would be caused by a poor connection to the single frame ground which all the front lights share. The rear lights all have a common ground, but much different (the grounds are near the lights) than the front light grounds so a poor ground is not the cause.
I believe that you have a defective headlight switch because when pulled to its first detent, only the parking lights come on and the next detent turns on the headlights in addition to the parking lights. The brake lights are on a separate circuit and not involved.
I intalled the new switch, but still no parking or tail lights. Since that didn't work, I have no idea where to go from there. Any help would be great.
Looking at the owner's manual, the olny fuse related to the lights is labeled as "TAIL" on the fuse block. It's a 10A fuse between the A/C and INJ1 fuses. It controls power to the headlamp switch (circuit 240).
The dash lights are controlled by a different fuse that protects the LCD dash assembly so it should still be working.
Fixed it. The fusewas the problem. I put a new one in and now it works. Yeah i know that should have been the first thing to check.... Thanks for the help.
