Default small coolant hose...do i need it?

there is a small coolant hose on 86 engines (possibly others?) that runs from the rear of the intake to the heater core lines (right before the hot water control valve). It's a rubber hose leaving the intake, then hooks into a metal hose, and then back into rubber hose before connecting to the heater core lines. see figure #1 below.

my question, is it needed? i needed a new hot water control valve, and on 85-87 that is made into the 2 metal heater core lines, so you need the whole thing. it cost like $80 from ecklers. i found a used one on ebay that i got for $19 after shipping. it works great, but didn't have the connection for the small hose i described above (maybe some years didn't have it?). see figure #2 below. can i just block it off? does the line see much pressure?

The purpose is to relieve steam pressure.

I would put a T in the line and run a hose to the intake fitting.
