Whatever you do....Allways get the Old Parts that they Used.I Mark them to make sure they were out of my Car.I don't trust too many Shops.I do 90% of the work myself.I even mark my tires when I leave it for a rotation. That way I know they did it...Just keeps em honest.

Well it was to late to stop my dealer from doing the work so the car is done. They told me that the Optispark was very corroded. And that they are sure the Optispark was bad.

I would think that an Optispark that is “very corroded” would not work at all. I will ask to see the part when I pick-up the car and they better still have the part.

Anyway thanks for all your replies and next time I call Chris. I have already found a shop near my house that specializes in corvettes and their labor rate is $70 per hour.

Yeah I would be very interested in seeing the old parts. The optispark is mostly plastic, very corroded would be very hard to tell unless the actually disassembled it.

Yeah, that reminds me of my last visit to my local GMC dealer. I had a leaking intake gasket with water in the oil. They flushed my oil 3 times (so they say) and left the same old used fricken oil filter on it. How do I know this - because 1 month later the filter plugged, oil blew out everywhere, and toasted the engine. They wouldn't accept responsibility because I had installed the filter. I towed it out of there.

Sorry to get O/T. Back to opti. I had the exact same problem you had last fall. It would just die while running and would seem to start back up after some cooling. I had code 16. I replaced the opti with a new GM unit. All was well, until a few weeks ago (less than 1k miles). Now it drives fine but if I park for a while it then won't start again. Then if it cools off it will restart. Code 16 again. How can an opti fail so fast? Or do you think I have another problem somewhere? Following the service manual procedure, there is nothing in the diagnostics for code 16 relating to the coil or module. Basically you check for 5 V at the connectors from the ECM and if that is good, it has to be the opti. I can get a replacement GM part due to short time, but I don't want to replace it and have it dead again next year. What could be killing my opti's? I'm a low mileage driver, stored winters in heated garage, never had water on this opti at all (no rain or engine washing). My engine temps stay low so I can't see how mine is subjected to any more heat than anyone else. But it seems to be a heat related issue in the optics. I'm looking for answers too.

not sure if anyone answered your question on how to retrieve error codes from your ALDL connector. Check out the "The Quick Paper Clip Test" section, and you will learn how to read your own stored error codes. Then to desypher what the codes mean, click on "Trouble Code Website", which is hotlinked in the same paragraph.

good luck.....

I'm glad to see us help keep this brother from gettin' hosed. That labor/price rate is rediculous!
