My handbrake does not seem to be working and feels very limp? When you pull on it, it does not lock in place, you can push it up and down freely? Any ideas on what to check?
Mine felt like that when I first got it, and I found that whoever had serviced the handbrake last forgot to remove the pin they put in to disable the automatic tensioner. It's just a nail (or in my case a broken off screw...) or something that's put through a hole in the side of the assembly to hold back the pawl on the tensioner. Otherwise, I couldn't really tell you.
When you pull up to set the parking brake, you push the brake handle down to stow it. The BRAKE light on the instrument panel illuminates indicating the the parking brake in engaged. If it stayed up, it would really make getting in and out impractical. The brake handle will freely go up and down while the brake is set. To release the brake, you step on the brake pedal while pulling the brake handle up, pushing the release button on the handle and then pushing it back down. Thats how it works in a 91....

Did someone set the brake by pulling up on the handle too hard? That's what happened to mine. In order to get it to release, the cover needs to be moved enough to get at the base of the handle. There are two screws that hold the cover in place. A medium size screwdriver seems to work for tripping the release mechanism that holds the brake once you figure out where it's located.
