hmmmm, thanks Mo. There was nothing between the separator plate and the 1-2 accumulator piston. The piston was even well up into the accumulator, so I'm at a loss. The only other sign that something wasn't as left by the factory was an extra check ball. I guess I'll have to verify the valve body passages against the manul to see what's going on. I even ordered the transgo shift kit along with my rebuild parts. Ahh, the joys of buying a used car...
Sounds like someone tried to firm up the 1-2 accumulator. Thats a old hot rodder trick, along with drill and tapping the passage that fills it and replacing it with a screw.
I remember installing I think it was a B&M kit ( in my 89 when I had it) and it had 2 sleeves that slide over the shaft the accumulator rides on, and the sleeve would hold the accumulator in a fixed position as Alvin was suggesting... One above the separator plate the other below actually replacing the springs. I had to file the length to besure they were not too long...
But it sounds like that is not the case...
so I agree something is certainly amiss... the goosd thing is that the TRansgo kits include the missing springs for the accumulator...
In all circumstances, you want to have a spring in the 2nd gear accumulator. This is part of the 2nd gear accumulator assembly, and has very much to do with the quality of the 1-2 shift at part throttle, & at WOT.
